Husserl’s (1991) Cartesian Meditations, the fifth of which outlines his theory of intersubjectivity, is not an easy read but it is quite short and offers quite a good introduction to phenomenology overall, so it is worth tackling. An excellent critique of this position is to be found in Schutz (1971). It is difficult to pin Mead down on this issue but Joas (1985) offers an interesting account, which sets Mead within his philosophical context. My own views on intersubjectivity are set out in my Intersubjectimty: The Fabric of Social Becoming (Crossley, 1996a). This book offers more extended discussions of Husserl, Mead and many others, and an earlier but more elaborated version of the argument concerning radical and egological forms of intersubjectivity.
